Artificial Awareness A Moonshot?
Yuhang Hu is a doctoral student at Columbia University's Creative Machines Lab, where engineers explore the possibility of self-aware robots. This pursuit of artificial awareness has been compared to "humankind's next moonshot" and poses many difficult questions. Hod Lipson, a mechanical engineer and director of the Creative Machines Lab, has devoted much of his career to this topic, which was once considered taboo and could jeopardize one's tenure. He has worked to create machines that can recognize when something is wrong with their hardware and adjust their behavior accordingly. This resilience is key as robots are used for more important tasks such as medical procedures, food manufacturing, and transportation, and any errors could have disastrous consequences.Added to Tech Innovation lists by @smccormack

Anti-Ransomware Tool Released
Bitdefender, in cooperation with No More Ransom, the Zürich Cantonal Police, the Zürich Public Prosecutors Office, and Europol, released a free MegaCortex decryptor. This decryptor works to unlock files encrypted by all variants of MegaCortex ransomware and is available to download from Bitdefender and No More Ransom's decryption tools portal. The portal contains 136 free tools for 165 ransomware variants, including Babuk, DarkSide, Gandcrab, and REvil.MegaCortex first appeared in May 2019, targeting networks infected with malware, such as Emotet and Qakbot, which were commonly used to steal data and deliver ransomware payloads. It is estimated that MegaCortex has infected over 1,800 companies worldwide, including several high-profile targets, but the figure is likely to be higher. The Sodinokibi decryptor released in September 2021 has helped victims save over $800 million in unpaid ransoms, and it is expected that the MegaCortex tool will do the same. Later in 2019, MegaCortex operators became the first to use double extortion tactics, exfiltrating sensitive data and encrypting it. In September 2021, 12 individuals were arrested in connection with the Dharma, LockerGoga, and MegaCortex ransomware families. The arrests allowed investigators to recover multiple private keys that can be used to recover data encrypted with the LockerGoga or MegaCortex malware.Added to Tech Innovation lists by @smccormack

E-cores Boost Core i5+ CPUs
The 13th-generation Intel Core CPUs, known as Raptor Lake, have performed well due to their large amount of cores. P-cores remain the same, but from i5 to i9, CPUs pick up extra E-cores to help with high-end professional applications. The less expensive processors in the lineup are taking the same approach. Leaks and early reports have been accurate about the core counts, clock speeds, and cache size. Raptor Lake follows the 12th-gen Alder Lake hybrid architecture with no design changes and will fit into the same LGA1700 motherboards. Core i9 and i7 CPUs have 8 P-cores, with the i9 having 16 E-cores and the i7 has 8. The Core i5 CPUs have 6 P-cores, with the i5-13600 and 13500 having 8 E-cores and the i5-13400 having 4. The Core i5-12500 and 12400 have no E-cores, making the 13th-gen more beneficial for budget-conscious gaming PCs and workstations. The Core i3 is the only CPU without E-cores, but their 4 P-cores should be fine for office work and low-end gaming systems. Intel's CPUs come with suffixes that provide extra information on them, and they have a 65 W base power and a UHD 770 or 730 integrated GPU, the same as the 12th-gen.Added to Tech History lists by @cbrown66

OneWeb to launch 40 satellites with SpaceX to enable continued expansion
OneWeb, a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications company, will launch 40 satellites with SpaceX by Sunday, 8 January 2023, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. This will be their sixteenth launch to date, and they're second with SpaceX, keeping them on track to deliver global coverage in 2023. This launch adds another 40 satellites to its LEO satellite fleet, over 80% of its first-generation constellation. These satellites will provide global wholesale connectivity for their partners. This milestone mission marks OneWeb's second time launching from Florida, where their satellites are also produced by OneWeb Satellites – a joint venture between OneWeb and Airbus. This launch will enable them to continue expanding services worldwide as they grow their fleet and seek to initiate services for more partners across the US, southern Europe, Australia, and more. OneWeb's connectivity solutions are already active in Alaska, Canada, the UK, Greenland, and the wider Arctic area, providing internet connectivity to unserved and underserved rural and remote communities and businesses. The launch is scheduled to take place by 8 January 2023 at 11:55 p. m. ET / 9 January 2023 at 4:55am UTC.Added to tech tools lists by @mpicard

Elon Musk's EV Struggles
Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk have always been a study of good news and bad news. The latest good news is that in the fourth quarter of 2022, Tesla delivered 405 278 electric vehicles - a 40% year-over-year increase and a record-breaking number - though this figure was slightly lower than analyst expectations. Over the year, 1.3 million vehicles were delivered, compared to 936,000 EVs in 2021 and 499,550 in 2020. The stock price dropped 12% on news of the slightly lower-than-expected deliveries, and the stock has since continued to fall, now trading at its lowest levels since August 2020. This 72% collapse in Tesla's stock price since January 2022 has reduced the company's market capitalization and Musk's wealth by hundreds of billions of dollars. The cratering of the stock price can largely be blamed on the $23 billion of Tesla stock Musk sold in 2022 to finance his new hobby of owning and steering social-media platform Twitter. According to Forbes, Musk was the leading inside seller of stock last year. This has caused anxiety amongst institutional investors and the public about Musk being distracted from his duties at Tesla.Added to Financial News lists by @asmith

Students Use AI Chatbot for Schoolwork
New York City public schools have banned using ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, due to concerns that students could use it to cheat on homework and essays. ChatGPT was released in November and quickly drew attention, with some industry observers calling it one of the most intelligent AI applications ever created. It gained over a million users within a few days of its launch. Its developer, OpenAI, is in talks to sell shares at a valuation of $29 billion, making it one of the most valuable U.S. startups.Added to Learning AI lists by @cbrown

Delayed Data Platform Delays Patient Data
NHS England has extended its contract with the US spy-tech company Palantir for the system built at the height of the pandemic to give it more time to resolve the twice-delayed procurement of a data platform to support health service reorganization and tackle the massive care backlog. Campaigners and legal groups have threatened to mount legal challenges around separate, related NHS dealings with Palantir. The contract has been extended until September 2023 in a deal worth £11.5 million ($13.8 million). NHS England has been conducting a £360 million ($435 million) procurement of a separate but linked Federated Data Platform (FDP), originally expected in June 2022 but has now been delayed until September 2022. NHS England has stated that it is "committed" to procuring future data management and analytics provision but requires adequate time. It would be impractical and uneconomic to replace the current contractor, as two concurrent procurement processes would need to be run for the same service.Added to Market Shakeout lists by @phogan
